Today’s one good thing: tickets purchased to see Wild Flag (at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham) at the end of this month… well, you need something to look forward to in January!

Happy New Year everyone! I haven’t written a proper blog post in oooh six months or so - therefore what better time to pick up the writing baton than with a post on the first day of 2012? Well, I suppose six months (or so) earlier would have been better but to be honest with you dear reader i’ve been too busy being depressed and worrying about 101 other things which I have next to no control over.

2012 is therefore (in theory at any rate) the chance to write a new chapter and exorcise some of those demons. 2011 was, barring a few glimmers of light, a pretty dark year for me personally - depression is one hell of a beast to deal with. Some people (who shall remain nameless) went missing and others really stepped up to the plate and helped me through a really difficult time. In fact i’d go as far as to say that 2011 was the most traumatic year of my 31 years on this planet to date. Counselling helped and so did the sage advice of my lovely friends and my wife to who I owe everything. I’m not ‘fixed’ and maybe I never will be but at least i’m on the mend and that’s something to be grateful for.

However i’m not going to dwell on the past in this blog post as 2012 is the year when *finally* things head in an upward trajectory. This is the theory at any rate i’m just hoping now that everything works out in practice. My plan for today is rather sketchy at present but involves reading some more of Armando Iannucci’s excellent ‘The Audacity of Hype: Bewilderment, Sleaze and Other Tales of the 21st Century‘ on my shiny new Kindle, maybe starting on Season 1 of Portlandia, eating a big roast dinner, maybe watching a film or two and err… relaxing.

I leave you with a video for one of my favourite current jams! The Black Keys - Lonely Boy.

"We must seem so pathetic to you, pointless even. our cottage industries. our cheap gimmicks. our low hundreds. wall of hugs. new slang. heat rash. yr. cats in paris making cartoons, stagecoachs’ christmas cards, eva tomassis arts and crafts, alcopop/bsms samplers, everyone’s hand made sleeves. All these people working themselves to the bone, mostly happily, for shit wages and condescending journalism, because they’re doing what they believe to be right, and they can see the fire in the eyes of those low hundreds that lets them know it’s truly appreciated."

Let's Spread the Love.

spreadthelovetwitter:

The world can seem cold, cynical and lonely. It is easy to turn on the news and feel despair and that nothing can be done. It’s easy to scoff at talk of “Occupying” but all over the world people are showing they care. We all see it but sometimes we are overwhelmed by negativity. It’s easy. It’s…

I’m not as sad as Dostoevsky
I’m not as clever as Mark Twain
I’ll only buy a book for the way it looks
And then I stick it on the shelf again

This is just a modern rock song
This is just a sorry lament
We’re four boys in corduroys
We’re not terrific but we’re competent

Stevie’s full of good intentions
Richard’s into rock ‘n’ roll
Stuart’s staying in and he thinks it’s a sin
That he has to leave the house at all

"Were you not told?
Did you not know?
Everything around you is being sold
Do you not care?
Were you not there?
Everybody else was going spare
What’s yours and mine?
Does this escape you all the time?
Sometimes I wish protesting was sexy on a Saturday night"

Quite surprised there isn’t a “Sarah Lund Fuck Yeah!” tumblr account yet (unless i’ve missed it of course). The first series of The Killing (currently showing on BBC4) is the best thing i’ve watched on TV in quite some time (maybe since the very first series of “24”. I’m completely hooked. Catch up on iPlayer if you know what’s good for you! ^_^
